Kathmandu is the capital city of Nepal by the mountains of Chandragiri, Nagarjun, Shivapuri, and Phulchoki. The city is the gateway for tourists to the area and is at the centre of the country’s economy. The rich history of the area, which dates back some 2000 years, is reflected in its landmarks. The Boudhanath stupa is a central focus point for the Tibetan/Buddhist religious community and is one of the holiest sites in Kathmandu. The centre for tourists in the area is Durbar Square where the Royal Family resided until leaving approximately a century ago. Durbar means palace in Nepali, and the palace building remains, together with a myriad of temples.

The Swayambunath Temple is situated in the Kathmandu Valley and is often referred to as the monkey temple due to the holy monkeys that reside there. The Stupa is decorated with the eyes and eyebrows of Buddha together with the Nepali unity symbol. Several temples and shrines accompany the stupa at the site.
